Defending champion Ateneo is 13-0 and is looking for an elimination round sweep to make the UAAP Finals outright.
The no. 2 team with a 9-4 record is standing in the way of the Blue Eagles. Does this sound all too familiar?
Ateneo goes for a sweep Wednesday in UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball and the champs have UP as their last assignment for the elimination round.
The Fighting Maroons have a say on this year’s playoff format and if UP can pull an Adamson like eight years ago, we’re in for a traditional Final Four.
In Season 74, the Adamson Falcons stopped the Ateneo juggernaut in the final game of the eliminations, 62-46 on September 10, 2011 at the Araneta Coliseum, dropping the Blue Eagles to 13-1.
It didn’t matter in the end as the Blue Eagles still completed a four-peat but the Adamson loss was the only blemish in that otherwise perfect run by Ateneo.
“I think ang pwedeng tumalo lang sa Ateneo [complacency],” coach Leo Austria said.
Coach Leo, now with San Miguel Beer in the PBA, was handling Adamson when the Falcons prevented an Ateneo sweep in the UAAP eight years ago.
“Unang-una, whatever happens twice-to-beat na sila. It’s the same. Kung manalo ka ngayon o sa next game, you’re in the Finals. Kailangan lang ng isa. But if I’m the coach, I wanna make it right now,” he added.
A team that makes it to 13-0 is a juggernaut, that’s for sure. The odds are definitely stacked against UP now the same way they were with Adamson in 2011.
But if there’s one chance to catch a team off guard, it’s when the team is undefeated at 13-0. However, it’s an unenviable task and undefeated teams know better.
“Yung complacency, dapat na-tackle na nila ngayon. It’s really hard [to beat] because yung focus nila is to win another game to make the Finals automatic,” Austria said.
“No need to wait, it’s a lot of advantage dahil step-ladder eh. You have a lot of time to prepare. It’s a big advantage sa Ateneo,” he added.
