Rey Suerte left the UAAP 82 Men’s Basketball Tournament something to remember him by, shooting University of the East over National University, 79-77, Wednesday at MOA Arena.
Playing the last game in his first and only season for the Red Warriors, Suerte turned in a fine finish with 28 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks.
There was no bigger basket than his one-hander that broke off a 74-all tie and built up a two-point lead for his side, 76-74, with 20.1 ticks to go.
Neil Tolentino then forced Dave Ildefonso into a tough fadeaway jumper and at the other end, Philip Manalang split from the stripe to increase the UE lead to three.
The Bulldogs kept coming with JV Gallego's triple from way out, but Suerte and Manalang shut the door on them once and for all by going 2-of-4 from free throws.
In the end, Manalang had five points, seven assists, and four rebounds while Senegalese powerhouse Alex Diakhite posted a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double.
Behind Suerte and Manalang, as well as other graduating players Nick Abanto and Jed Mendoza, UE closes its campaign at 4-10 - a three-win improvement from last year.
On the other hand, the Bulldogs have just trudged through another sorry season with only two wins to show in 14 games.
Dave Ildefonso and JV Gallego topped the scoring column in this one with 20 points apiece.
UE 79 - Suerte 28, Diakhite 17, Abanto 6, Cruz 6, Pagsanjan 6, Manalang 5, Mendoza 5, Antiporda 3, Tolentino 3, Apacible 0.
