University of the East got lucky with Rey Suerte taking its mantle of leadership for the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament.

Now the Red Warriors' season is over, though, it's Suerte's turn to hope to strike gold for the next step in his young career.

Asked what the future holds for him, he answered, "Siguro aakyat sa PBA. Kung papalarin."

There is no question, though, that the 6-foot-3 swingman made the most of his lone year in Recto, putting up per game counts of 17.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.2 steals in 32.2 minutes of action.

With that, Suerte left no doubt he belongs alongside the best of the best playing on the biggest stage and under the brightest lights. "Grabe ang competition dito," he said. "Sobrang hirap talaga, pero na-amaze ako sa sarili ko kasi kaya ko palang makipagsabayan."

Now, he hopes to stand out in a draft class which has already lost supposed first round picks in Joshua Munzon, Alvin Pasaol, and Santi Santillan.

And in the end, the 23-year-old has nothing but gratitude for Recto for this big break. "Sobrang maraming salamat talaga kasi from our first game to our last game, sinuportahan nila kami. Wala akong regret dito," he said.
