Barkley Ebona was only on the floor for 13 minutes in his very last game for Far Eastern University, Wednesday at Araneta Coliseum.
The graduating forward incurred a disqualifying foul at the 1:19 mark of the second quarter and was forced to go back to the locker room for the remainder of the game.
Ebona's energy and effort would have been very much welcome as the Tamaraws battled back in the second half as actually, despite his short stint on the floor, he still had nine points and seven rebounds to his name.
Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be and the 22-year-old was kept out of the court as his teammates ultimately succumbed to University of Sto. Tomas. "Masakit kasi siyempre, alam kong senior ako e so dapat role model ako. Sabi nga nina coach na dapat yung mga seniors yung hindi dapat mawalan ng disiplina," he said.
Even worse, Ebona was kept out of the court as his teammates sang their school hymn for the last time in the season.
And for him, that stung all the more as he would never have another chance to sing the FEU Hymn on the floor. "Masakit lang na sa last game ko, hindi ako naka-exit ng maayos. Hindi ko man lang nakanta hymn namin," he said.
And now, the 6-foot-8 big man is only left to wonder what could have been - especially as, in his eyes, the call that ejected him was questionable. "Para sa akin, flop lang yun e. Naka-hands up lang ako tapos nung pag harap niya, biglang humiga then tayo agad," he said.
He then continued, "Parang ang nipis naman nun para thrown out agad. Matatanggap ko pa kung (regular) foul lang yun, aaminin ko pa, pero yung thrown out again, kalokohan yun."
In that sequence, Growling Tiger Soulemane Chabi Yo had just hit an inside basket before turning around to run back to the other end of the court.
It was there that Chabi Yo's face met Ebona's right elbow and not long after, the former was down on the floor and the latter was assessed a disqualifying foul.
Even though he had been ejected, though, Ebona made sure to still help out his teammates as they returned to the dugout at halftime. "Sinabi ko sa kanila na kahit wala na ako, dapat hindi sila panghinaan ng loob, dapat mag-step up lahat ng ipapasok para sa community," he said.
In the end, that kind of passion for Morayta will always be what the recruit from Cebu will be remembered for. "In all seriousness, alam naman natin ginagawa ni Barkley para sa amin. I told them in the dugout na this game will not define this season lalo na with Barkley," head coach Olsen Racela said.
He then continued, "I don't want yung nangyari kanina to define what he did for FEU. Malaking bagay yung na-achieve namin this season with him and our other veterans leading us."
