University of Sto. Tomas has more than a handful reasons for celebration in the UAAP 82 Basketball Tournaments.
Both the Growling Tigers and the Golden Tigresses are playing in the stepladder playoffs in the Men's and Women's Tournaments, respectively.
And at the same time, both Soulemane Chabi Yo and Grace Irebu have been recognized as MVPs in their respective tournaments.
Beninese ball of energy Chabi Yo was impressive all throughout and left no doubt that he was the top individual player as his 76 Statistical Points (SPs) were 12 better than closest competitor Justine Baltazar of De La Salle University.
Just as impressive was Congolese powerhouse Irebu who totaled 90 SPs on the back of averages of 21.9 points, 15.1 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 1.5 blocks as UST Women's growled all the way to the second-seed.
Aside from the top individual players in the two divisions, Espana will also celebrate its first Rookie of the Year since 2009.
Mark Nonoy will cap off his ferocious first year in the Seniors by taking home the trophy for the top rookie - the first Growling Tiger to do so since Jeric Teng. "Malaking bagay ito sa program namin kasi testament yan na yung mga players na pumupunta sa amin, nama-maximize yung potential," head coach Aldin Ayo said.
With norms of 10.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists, he accumulated 39.29 SPs to beat out teammate Sherwin Concepcion and Far Eastern University's Xyrus Torres.
