Mark Nonoy came up clutch for University of Sto. Tomas in their elimination game against the University of the Philippines, Sunday at Araneta Coliseum.
Of course, he wasn’t alone as Soulemane Chabi Yo and Sherwin Concepcion were also there.
Still, the Rookie of the Year's two triples in the last three minutes proved to be key in the Growling Tigers' finishing kick.
As it turns out, though, he was just channeling his inner Mark Cruz. "Nag-advice siya sa akin na tiwala lang kay coach tapos pag-open, lisensyado naman para itira. Nakatulong din yung ginawa namin kasi naranasan na niya e," he shared.
He then continued, "In-accept ko yung advice niya kaya nakatulong sa akin."
A day ago, Cruz, the playmaking product out of Colegio de San Juan de Letran, went to UST's practice to scrimmage.
There, Nonoy was a firsthand witness to just how capable and confident the one-time NCAA champion was. "Dinedepensahan ko nga rin siya. Kahit ako, nahirapan din talaga," he said.
Even more, Cruz, who now plays for Pampanga in the MPBL, also took time to teach the super rookie himself quite a few tricks of the trade - and we all know just how much of a big shot-taker and a big shot-maker the former is.
And up against the Fighting Maroons, Nonoy put all his lessons learned to good use and totaled 16 points, four assists, four rebounds, and two steals. "Napapanood ko na siya sa TV dati, nung Letran pa siya. Noon pa, nakita ko na sa kanyang 'di talaga sa height lang e - sa puso talaga," he shared.
He then continued, "Kaya gusto ko lang madundan yung fighting spirit na meron siya."
