The University of the Philippines clinched a twice-to-beat advantage for the first time in the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament.
Their enjoyment of it, however, didn't last long as the Fighting Maroons' playoff incentive got discarded by University of Sto. Tomas last Sunday.
Now, State U heads into a do-or-die match with the Growling Tigers on Wednesday for the right to challenge Ateneo de Manila University in the Finals.
That in itself is a positive - a positive amidst all the negatives.
Another positive was the performance of Juan Gomez de Liano the last time around as he turned in his best outing of the season thus far with 20 points.
Because of those, UP remains upbeat about its chances of finally getting one over UST. "I'm just really thankful for the situation we are in right now because we have another chance. It's a do-or-die game so we just gotta want it more," Juan GDL said.
And there, all of the Fighting Maroons are only looking forward to silencing their naysayers - especially as they are now 0-3 up against the Growling Tigers. "That (winless record) doesn't matter. What matters is what's gonna happen in that game," their third-year playmaker said.
He then continued, "We want to make it to the Finals again and prove everyone wrong."
Only time will tell if Juan GDL will yet again be a man of his word.
