Looking to top their previous performances, National University Pep Squad head coach Ghicka Bernabe went local.
NU deviated from their well-known and much talked about Pixar concept and showcased Filipino pride with another show-stopping performance to bag back-to-back titles in the UAAP Season 82 Cheerdance Competition at the MOA Arena Sunday.
Bernabe, whose squad performed a routine that was inspired by the animated movie Coco last year, felt that this season was the right time to use the concept that had been in their list of options for quite a while especially with other teams using themes from around the world.
“Our concept, ‘yung Philippines kasi lagi namin siyang nagiging part ng concept, pero hindi pa siguro ‘yun ‘yung time para isalang siya,” said Bernabe. “Marami ng umaalis na concept. Laging nasa ibang bansa, nagtu-tour sa Asia, sa Europe, kung saan-saan.”
The NU Pep Squad had three wardrobe changes, transitioning from Barongs to a Philippine flag-inspired outfits and wrapping it up with Sarimanok costumes and used Pinoy music in their routine.
“It’s time na mag-give back para sa Filipinos. Sabi nga namin balik-bayan tayo ngayon,” said Bernabe, whose squad won the six of the last seven titles in one of the crowd-drawing events in the premier collegiate league.
The Sampaloc-based squad performed last but the NU Pep Squad’s electrifying routine highlighted by difficult stunts and impressive pyramids amazed the crowd and was enough to convince the judges.
But more than dominating the competition, NU’s performance was dedicated to its loyal supporters.
“Lahat ng mga sumuporta sa amin noon napatunayan namin kung gaano nila kami kamahal so dapat bigyan namin sila ng magandang performance,” said Bernabe.
And NU did.
