Ateneo de Manila University is the first team in the history of UAAP Men's Basketball to go 16-0.
With that, the Blue Eagles of Season 82 could claim to have had the greatest season any team has had in the league.
And with that, the three-peat titlists have proven team captain Mike Nieto to be a man of his word.
"Of course, the three-peat is one of our goals, but we also want to be known as the greatest team ever," the confident leader told media days before the beginning of the season.
Now they have done just that, Nieto reiterated what he had meant back then. "What I meant to say was we want to be the best versions of ourselves - on and off the court," he said.
Still, if there's any question about what he had said, "Big Mike" could rest assured he has the answer. "There were a lot of negative comments towards what I said. Ngayon, I have nothing to say about that. Sila na lang magsabi kung kami ba talaga, 'di ba," he shared.
He then continued, "We just have the record to show it. We just have three medals to prove it."
Indeed, Ateneo stands alone as the first and only team in more than eight decades to have gone undefeated in 16 games.
This, because all previous season sweeps in men's basketball wound up with 14-0 records.
While there is no doubt that the Blue Eagles worked hard for their season sweep, they also know full well luck had something to do with it. "We just worked hard, yun lang. Hindi ako makakapagsalita para sa mga kalaban namin kasi for sure, everyone's goal is to win a championship," their team captain said.
He then continued, "Basta kami, we just worked hard and good thing naman na kami yung pinalad."
