Ateneo de Manila University has gone undefeated for the entirety of the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament.
But that was not before the Blue Eagles were pushed to the limit by very game University of Sto. Tomas in Game 2, Wednesday.
In the end, the now-three-peat champions prevailed.
But still, the fact of the matter is the Growling Tigers came closest at threatening them.
Ateneo has an average winning margin of 16.5 points in 16 games.
Up against UST, though? That falls to just nine.
That is exactly why Blue Eagles mentor Tab Baldwin has nothing but respect for counterpart Aldin Ayo. "What kind of fool would I be if I didn't respect what he puts on the court? It's really outstanding, the way his team plays," he shared.
Coach Tab furthered that, indeed, they got challenged by the Growling Tigers most of all. As he put it, "Tactically, they're tough. Physically, they're extremely tough. I think with all the teams we've played, they're the one team that tries to impose themselves on us."
He then continued, "I think most other teams were trying to defend themselves from us imposing ourselves on them. He (Ayo) plays each game on his own merit."
And that is also exactly why Baldwin has no doubt that tough Coach Aldin and tough UST will only bounce back. "They will console one another and they will come back with a fighting spirit next year which is just typical of them. I have huge respect for him and his team," he said.
