Aldin Ayo and Tab Baldwin faced off in a rubber match in the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Finals.
And this time around, Ayo's University of Sto. Tomas succumbed to Baldwin's Ateneo de Manila University.
With that, the scorecard in their coaching chess match is 2-1 in favor of Coach Tab.
Make no mistake, however, coach Aldin has nothing but respect for his counterpart - and the former reiterated that he thinks that the latter is a blessing to Philippine basketball.
"Maganda na nandito siya," he said. "Si Coach Tab, meron siyang spot na nakuha as coach, but lots of coaches here in the Philippines are learning from him. For me, mas maganda yun eh."
Indeed, Ayo has already stated again and again that he and the rest of the local coaches are only becoming better when trying to match up with Baldwin.
Personally, the one-time NCAA and one-time UAAP champion coach said that his game planning has expanded so much in the three times he and the Blue Eagles' brilliant tactician have faced off. As he put it, "Well, yung approach sa laro and then yung X's and O's, ang dami kong natutunan. Every time you compete, makikita mo yung ginagawa niya and every time, matututo ka."
And that kind of iron sharpens iron not only goes for coaches, but players as well. "Foreign players and coaches, may mga disadvantages like una, they're going to take a spot and pangalawa, hindi naman lahat, pero I think they're expensive," he shared.
He then continued, "But aside from those disadvantages, grabe yung benefit na binibigay niya sa Philippine basketball."
