UAAP 82: NU books finals seat in Men's Table Tennis

National University booked the last remaining Finals ticket after eking out a 3-2 win over De La Salle University in the UAAP Season 82 Men's Table Tennis Stepladder at the Blue Eagle Gym Tuesday.
The Bulldogs will face the undefeated University of Santo Tomas Tiger Paddlers in the Finals on Wednesday, November 20 at the same venue.
"Sinabihan ko lang si Diaz na gumalaw saka tapang lang, yun yung inadvice ko bago mag last game, kasi nakita ko humihinto siya eh," said NU coach Judit Yulde.
With the match tied with two games apiece, NU's John Diaz dismantled Enric Remitio in thrilling fashion, 12-10, 8-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9.
Trailing 0-2, La Salle pair of Christian Crisostomo and Daniel Ocon, and Tarak Cabrido stringed two straight wins to tie the match, 2-2.
La Salle squandered a two-game lead to Adamson University but recovered just in time to enter the second phase of the stepladder, 3-2.
Remitio outmuscled Isaac Eneria in five grueling sets, 11-5, 5-11, 11-13, 11-8, 13-11, for the victory.
Falcon John Polido outlasted Cabrido, 11-9, 11-5, 8-11, 4-11, 11-4, to tie the match at 2-2.
Women's Table Tennis:
Defending champion University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo set up a Finals date after dispatching their Final Four opponents in the UAAP Season 82 Women's Table Tennis Tournament, Tuesday at the Blue Eagle Gym.
The championship series is scheduled on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the same venue.
UST made quick work of fourth-ranked Far Eastern University, 3-0, whle Ateneo denied De La Salle University, 3-1.
"The best things to plan against Ateneo in the finals are lineups and preparation. Nandoon kasi ang winning point talaga, yung pag assign ng players," said Lady Paddlers coach Lori Wadjad.
UST pair Kathleen Tempiatura and Leigh Villanueva came back from a set deficit against Lady Tamaraws Camille Mutuc and Danah Cruz to seal the victory, 10-12, 11-8, 11-7, 11-7
Ana Calvo started Ateneo's run to the Finals with a tough 7-11, 11-9, 11-4, 4-11, 12-10 win over La Salle's Jhoana Go.
Jasmine Tan and Kimberly Sorongon's duo gave La Salle its only win, 11-4, 11-7, 11-8, against Hellari Calvo and Geque Carado.
High School Table Tennis:
De La Salle-Zobel barged into the Finals after escaping the scare from lower-ranked National University-Nazareth School, 3-2, Tuesday in the UAAP Season 82 Boys' Table Tennis Stepladder rubber match at the Blue Eagle Gym.
The Junior Archers will face University of Santo Tomas in the best-of-three finals on Wednesday, November 20 at the same venue.
Trailing 1-2, NU's Johncarlo Facun survived Andrei Villacruel, 11-9, 9-11, 11-2, 8-11, 12-10, to force a decider.
But La Salle's Elijah Yamson came through with an 11-4, 11-5, 11-6 victory against Harvey Facun, to seal the finals ticket.
In the first match, NU disarmed La Salle-Zobel of its twice-to-beat advantage, 3-2.
With their backs against the wall, the Bullpups racked up three straight wins, capped by Johncarlo Facun's triumph against Earnst Salloman, 11-9, 13-11, 11-13, 11-7.
NU defeated University of the East in the knockout first phase of the stepladder earlier, 3-1.
Facun scored a come-from-behind win over Jefferson Manalao that iced the win for the Bullpups, 5-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-5, 14-12.
