Creativity, as much as any other skill or attribute, is important when it comes to playing the game of basketball.
Sure, athleticism, speed, strength, talent, all of those are the true keys to becoming a good basketball player, but when you add creativity to that mix, that is when the good become great.
Creativity is also something that these UAAP standouts surely don’t lack, and they showcase it in these beautiful plays.
From mid-air switches to finding ways to go through - or even over - defenders, here are some of the most creative plays from the Men’s Basketball Tournament of UAAP Season 82!
Ricci Rivero Begins the Season with a Bang
One of the most prevalent storylines heading into the season was the return of the high-flying, ultra-athletic Ricci Rivero. Now with the UP Fighting Maroons, Ricci was ready to showcase what he could do in a new environment. Immediately, in his very first game in maroon and white, Ricci dazzled the UP faithful with a one-handed alley-oop finish from teammate Jun Manzo.
Welcome back, Ricci!
Rhenz Abando skies over Ateneo
Speaking of fancy finishes from way up high, another high-flyer that’s taken the league by storm is none other than UST Growling Tigers rookie Rhenz Abando. With unparalleled athleticism and hops, Abando has made an immediate impact on the Final Four-hunting Tigers.
In an early season game against the defending champions Ateneo Blue Eagles, Abando found a pretty creative - and effective - way to free himself up from the defense, and that was to go all the way up and finish a well-placed pass from teammate Brent Paraiso off with a nasty jam over Blue Eagles big man Will Navarro.
Jamie Malonzo Shifts in Mid-Air
DLSU Green Archer Jamie Malonzo is proving to be one of the team's most important weapons in their hunt for a spot in the playoffs. The multi-talented forward can shoot from the outside, but what he does best is take it to the rim, and when you get him on the open court, forget about it.
Against collegiate rivals Ateneo, Malonzo went head-to-head with one of the best and most athletic players in the league in Thirdy Ravena, and wound up putting the former Finals MVP on a poster. It wasn’t easy though, as Malonzo had to get shifty in mid-flight to shake off Ravena’s defensive effort.
Thirdy Ravena Weaves Through Everyone
In his final year in blue and white, Thirdy Ravena is once again making everything click for the defending champions Ateneo Blue Eagles, as they’ve gone undefeated so far in the season and are on track for a third-consecutive title. Against one of their toughest challengers in the UP Fighting Maroons, Thirdy came up with a defensive play and got creative in dodging everyone on his way to the rim before finishing with a sweet, sweet finger roll over the defense.
Alec Stockton Splits the Defense
Firmly in the hunt for a spot in the post-season are the FEU Tamaraws, and that’s thanks to the contributions of one Alec Stockton. Against fellow Final Four contender Adamson Soaring Falcons, the playmaker showed off his more creative side by literally going in-between the defense to score the deuce.
Kobe Breaks Out the Euro-step before A Big Slam
When it comes to creativity on the court, very few can match that of UP Fighting Maroons breakout star Kobe Paras. The prized recruit has been solid for the Fighting Maroons all season, and has provided some of the year’s most insane plays, just like this one wherein he Euro-stepped his way between two NU Bulldogs defenders before finishing off the play with a thunderous tomahawk slam.
