Nazareth School of National University has yet to find its match in the UAAP 82 Boys Basketball Tournament.
Having won each and every one of their first 13 games, the Bullpups are on the verge of a sweep of the elimination round - and in turn, an automatic berth in the Finals, where they will try to go for back-to-back titles
Still, the thought of a second straight title - and even a rare perfect season - is far from the mind of the blue and gold. “Sa ngayon, stay in the present lang kami. Kumbaga, focused lang kami sa kung anong nasa harap namin,” team captain Gerry Abadiano said.
He then continued, “Ngayong paparating na ang FEU, dun muna focus namin. Kung makuha namin yung panalo, edi yun, pero one game at a time pa rin.”
Indeed, only one obstacle remains for a 14-0 elims run for National U, but what tall task it will be in the form of second-running Far Eastern University-Diliman.
Through the tournament, the Baby Tamaraws have seemed to be the squad best equipped to match up with the defending champions’ firepower - and on Wednesday, the two teams will meet to determine if there will be a Final Four or stepladder playoffs instead.
For the Bullpups, the game plan is simple - keep doing what they have been doing. As head coach Goldwin Monteverde put it, “Kung makakapag-sweep, okay, pero kami naman, kung anong game lang yung nasa harap, doon lang kami naka-focus.”
Whatever will be in the last game day of elims, one thing’s certain - Abadiano has his teammates laser-focused. “Hindi kami pressured. Susulat kami kung anong storya namin,” he said.
He then continued, “‘Di kami naglalaro para sa expectations ng iba, naglalaro kami para sa team namin and para sa school namin.”
