For the first time in four years, there will be no Gomez de Liano wearing the colors of the University of the Philippines in the men's seniors division.
With brothers Javi and Juan announcing their plans to fully focus on Gilas Pilipinas, the Fighting Maroons will be GDL-less for this year's UAAP Men's Basketball Tournament.
While they have left big shoes to be filled, State U made it clear that the brothers will still have its support as they move forward. "The GDLs have expressed their intention to devote their time to Gilas Pilipinas and the UP Men's Basketball Team (UPMBT) supports their move as it gives way to the greater calling of playing for the country. UP is, after all, all about serving the country," it said in a statement.
It then continued, "The GDLs represent the best of the UP basketball program and we support their desire to serve our country by playing for the national team."
Just like Javi and Juan, though, the maroon and green made it clear that no connections have been cut between them. "Still, they remain part of UPMBT. We are beyond grateful for their contributions to the uprising of the program in the recent years," the Diliman-based squad said.
Even more, while those two have decided to sit out Season 84, Kuya Joe actually remains in the running for the roster.
The 6-foot-5 forward had been in UP's Team B in the last two years and may very well finally get his break with the temporary absences of his younger brothers as well as the departures of Will Gozum, Pio Longa, Jaybie Mantilla, Jun Manzo, Jerson Prado, and Jaydee Tungcab.
