UAAP 82: Tiger Spikers raring to show best version
The last Finals appearance for the Tiger Spikers was in Season 74, when they came two wins short of a five-peat. They haven't been back since.

The UST Tiger Spikers finished UAAP Season 81 in 5th place, which should count as a respectable finish for all intents and purposes.

It was not.

Despite finishing 5th, UST also only won five games and missed the Final Four by four games. For a proud program such as that of the Tiger Spikers', that's a huge disappointment.

That should change this season.

"Ang masasabi ko lang sa kundisyon ng katawan namin ngayon at sa skills namin, mas mataas kumpara last season," Jau Umandal told ABS-CBN Sports.

"Sa program namin ngayon, maraming nagbago na mas effective pa samin this season," he added.

UST made the Final Four in Seasons 79 and 80, but identical 6-8 records from those two seasons are largely uninspiring.

The last big run for the Tiger Spikers came in Season 77, when they beat a Marck Espejo-led Ateneo team twice to tie for the league's best record.

But even then, UST failed to make the Finals as a no. 2 seed. The last Finals appearance for the Tiger Spikers was in Season 74, when they came two wins short of a five-peat.

UST will target a return to the Final Four first before thinking about anything else.

"Syempre kailangan namin itama mga pagkakamali namin last season," Umandal said.

"Ngayon, gagawin namin lahat ng best namin. Hindi naman sa hindi namin ginawa best namin last season, talagang kinapos lang kami. Pero ngayon, pipilitin namin maabot lahat ng pinaghirapan namin," he added.
