Lucille Almonte will have to wait a little longer to make her UAAP volleyball debut with the Adamson University Lady Falcons after suffering a left knee injury last month.
The Kings' Montessori School recruit sustained a left anterior cruciate ligament injury during a tune-up game against College of St. Benilde.
“She will not be included in the 14-man lineup because she's having therapy right now,” Adamson head coach Lerma Giron confirmed on Tuesday during the Season 82 volleyball press conference at the MOA Arena.
Giron added the open spiker, who averaged 9.7 points per game during the Lady Falcons’ Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference title conquest, underwent an operation on her knee.
“Next season na 'yung target sa kaniya,” Giron said.
With the promising rookie out, the mentor is looking at Maveth Torres and Gracelchen Ave as replacements for Almonte.
“Maganda lang naman kasi, siyempre, ay resilient tayo. Hindi natin hahayaan mangyari na kapag may nawala tapos na,” said Giron. “Of course, pag may nawala, kailangan natin gumawa ng paraan. Very confident pa rin naman mga bata kasi marami naman sa 14-man lineup na nag stand out.”
“[Si] Maveth Torres, hindi siya naka-lineup noong PVL pero 'yun nga sinabi ko sayo may nag-standout eh,” added Giron. “Then 'yung ating sophomore na si Gracelchen Ave, sila nagpapalitan sa pwesto.”
Aside from Almonte, the Lady Falcons will also miss the services of Chiara Permentilla, who is also still recovering from a knee injury, and do-it-all hitter Bern Flora, who decided to forego her last playing year.
Adamson will parade a good mix of veterans led by Trisha Genesis, Ceasa Pinar and libero Thang Ponce and a promising rookie crop bannered by prized setter Louie Romero, Rizza Cruz and Lorene Toring.
The Lady Falcons will open the season on Sunday against National University.
