A Gomez de Liano is still helping the University of the Philippines in its continued contention.
It's not sweet-shooting Javi or playmaking Juan, however.
Rather, it's kuya Joe's time to shine as a Fighting Maroon with his younger brothers having their full focus on Gilas Pilipinas. "It's sad that I won't be able to play with my brothers yet especially because, of course, we already have astounding chemistry," he said.
He then continued, "Hopefully, one day we can do that, but right now, I'm just focusing on my role in the team and giving my best in whatever the team needs."
In the ongoing 2020 Philippine Collegiate Champions League, the eldest GDL has provided a boost off the bench to the Bright Akhuetie and James Spencer-fueled side.
Before this break, the 6-foot-2 wing had played for the maroon and green Team B and spent quite some time as well in University of Sto. Tomas' own Team B.
Prior to all that, however, he was a key cog in UP Integrated School's quest to climb out of the cellar and in his last year as a Jr. Maroon, put up per game counts of 4.0 point and 4.9 rebounds.
Through it all, Joe GDL never lost full faith in himself. As he put it, "It took a long time for me to get this shot. I just kept believing in myself and kept working."
He then continued, "At the end of the day, it's just about not giving up."
Indeed, now, the 22-year-old is only ready and raring to grab the bull by its horns in finally making the cut for UP's Team A. "This is a blessing - to finally get a chance to play for Team A. I've been waiting so long and I'm just grateful to have this chance to play this year," he said.
