Far Eastern University came back from an early third set deficit to complete a 25-9, 25-20, 25-17, straight sets victory over University of the East on Tuesday in the UAAP Season 82 women’s volleyball tournament opener at the MOA Arena.
The Lady Tamaraws barely felt the departure of their key players from last year as they displayed balance scoring to start the season on a bright note.
“Thankful ako sa mga players ko kasi ang instructions ko sa kanila umpisahan namin ng maganda at tapusin ng maganda,” said FEU coach George Pascua. “Kasi ito ‘yung first game kumbaga ito ‘yun magi-gauge namin kung gaano katibay yung preparation na ginawa namin.”
Veteran middle Jeanette Villareal, Ivana Agudo and sophomore Lycha Ebon starred on offense for FEU while team captain Gel Cayuna orchestrated the Lady Tams fluid play with 18 excellent sets on top of nine points including the game-winning back-to-back aces.
Villareal finished with 11 points while Agudo got 10 markers for FEU, which saw the departure of seniors Heather Guino-o, Jerrili Malabanan and Kyle Negrito after last season as well as the decisions of Celine Domingo, France Ronquillo and Carlota Hernandez to bolt out of the team during the pre-season.
Cayuna landed five of the Lady Tams' 14 service winners while Ebon and Carandang got nine and eight points each.
FEU recovered from 10-7 down in the third frame with a 6-1 counterattack to regain the driver’s seat before cruising to a convincing victory.
Mean Mendrez was the lone bright spot for the Lady Warriors, scoring 13 points - all from attacks - with seven digs. Janeca Lana and Mariella Gabarda finished with eight markers each.
