Maji Mangulabnan is set to make her long-awaited UAAP debut as setter for the University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses on Wednesday in Season 82 of women’s volleyball at the MOA Arena.
The homegrown playmaker got the spot after head coach Kungfu Reyes decided to withdraw sophomore Mafe Galanza from the final 14-woman roster. Following a series of tune-up games that served as a battle ground for setters including veteran Alina Bicar for a place in the official roster, Mangulabnan impressed the coaching staff thus earning the nod to see action in the tournament that was delayed for a couple of weeks following the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
“Si Maji na ang replacement kay Mafe,” said Reyes of the UST high school product.
Mangulaban will play support for graduating Bicar in orchestrating the offense of the Tigresses, who are eyeing another trip to the Finals after finishing as bride’s maid to Ateneo de Manila University last year.
“’Yung series ng NCoV suspension nagkaroon kami ng tune-up games. Since neck-and-neck ang labanan sa setter, nagkaroon ng magandang performance si Maji,” said Reyes. “Since pwede pa magpalit ng line-up dahil sa suspension ng UAAP nagkaroon ng another chance si Maji.”
Mangulabnan, sister of the Ateneo Lady Eagles assistant coach Vince Mangulabnan, was cut from the roster last year.
According to UAAP eligibility head Rod Roque of University of the East, teams are allowed to replace players up until 48 hours before the start of the tournament as long as the substitute player is in the initial list of names entered for eligibility process.
“Actually, wala naman changes sa line-up. Galanza and Mangulabnan are part of the official line-up UST submitted,” cleared Roque to ABS-CBN Sports. “’Yun nga lang eh 18 players ang naka-submit.”
“Under UAAP rules eh kahit sinong team eh pwedeng mag-submit ng sobrang players kasi nga baka may ma-injure [heading to the season],” added Roque. “But they need to withdraw the excess players 48 hours before the start of the tournament.”
Galanza was in the initial list UST’s roster submitted for the original opening date of the second semester centerpiece sport.
“Pero kung natuloy yung February 15 [na opening], si Mafe na talaga ang setter namin,” said Reyes.
The Tigresses will take on National University on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the match that will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, LIGA SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD SkyCable Channel 183, iWant and via livestream.
