Last year’s runner-up Far Eastern University wasted no time in setting its intention of winning it all in motion after crushing University of the East, 25-10, 25-22, 25-23, on Tuesday to open the UAAP Season 82 men’s volleyball tournament on a high note at the MOA Arena.
Veterans Jude Garcia, JP Bugaoan and Peter Quiel delivered the goods for the Tamaraws but it was JJ Javelona who played the hero’s role in the scary stretch of the third set.
“Magandang opportunity na grinab ng team. Kaya naman kami pumunta dito para to get the game,” said FEU coach Rei Diaz.
Down, 23-21, in the third frame, Javelona hammered four straight hits to save FEU from yielding a set to a team composed of sophomores and rookies.
The Season 81 boys’ Most Valuable Player Javelona debuted with a bang, dropping 11 points in 10-of-20 attacking clip to lead FEU. Quiel added 10 markers, Garcia finished with nine points, nine excellent receptions and four digs while Bugaoan and Mark Calado had eight points each for the Tams.
The Tams controlled the first two sets before facing tough resistance in the third frame.
“Magaling ‘yung UE nag-adjust sila,” said Diaz. “Medyo matagal kami maka-adapt and nag-adjust so magandang lesson para sa team.”
“’Yun naman yung system na meron tayo e. Kailangan manalo o matalo, ang mahalaga natututunan tayo,” he added. “Magandang opportunity yun na malagay sa ganoong sitwasyon para may matutunan pa rin.”
Kenneth Culabat posted 11 points while Lloyd Josafat added 10 markers for UE.
