To the shock of just about everybody, the University of the Philippines disposed of Ateneo de Manila University in straight sets to start the UAAP 82 Men's Volleyball Tournament.
Even more to the shock of just about everybody, the Fighting Maroons did it in style.
In particular, Louis Gamban became the talk of the town as he exhibited his emotions for each and every point.
That attitude was the plan all along, as it turns out. "Kasama po yun sa plano namin. Sa training po kasi, masaya lang kami kaya kung ano yung tine-training namin, yun lang ginawa namin," he said.
And that attitude was much welcome for a State U side that has not tasted victory against their Katipunan neighbors in six seasons.
The last time UP downed the Blue Eagles was in back in the first round of UAAP 76.
Enter Gamban, a player who had only known winning as a key cog for University of Perpetual Help in the NCAA Jrs. - and that has come to a close. "Sa Perps po kasi, galing po ako sa champion team so nakatulong po yun kasi bawal matalo. Laging fight lang nang fight," he said.
Make no mistake, however, the rookie has no ill will towards the Blue Eagles. "Charot-charot lang po yun. Nag-sorry rin ako agad sa Ateneo," he said through chuckles.
In the end, Gamban feels nothing but blessed to be playing on the biggest stage and under the brightest lights in his young career. "Hindi pa rin ako makapaniwala kasi siyempre, dream ko rin 'to kaya sa training, talagang pinapaghirapan po namin," he said.
