Louis Gamban owned the spotlight as the freshman made an immediate impact to help University of the Philippines score a huge upset over Ateneo de Manila University, 25-21, 25-20, 25-22, on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 82 men’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena.
The feisty hitter backed his on-court swag with an explosive debut of 10 points coming off eight attacks, a block and an ace spiked with six excellent receptions to star in the Fighting Maroons' first win over the Blue Eagles since the first round of Season 76.
Trailing, 20-21, in the third set, Gamban fired four straight points to push UP at match point. Ateneo saved a match point before Ruskin Ijiran sealed the win with a drop ball.
So kahit sino ang maging unang kalaban," said UP first year coach Rald Ricafort.
Freshman John Lomibao led UP with 11 points while seniors John Mark Castillo and Mac Millete registered nine and eight markers, respectively, for last year's cellar-dweller.
Chu Njigha got 12 points while Gian Glorioso added 11 markers for the Blue Eagles, who saw their 12-game head-to-head winning streak over their Katipunan neigbors snapped.
