Rookie Margot Mutshima made her presence felt as National University carved out 22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 15-13, upset win over University of Sto. Tomas in the UAAP Season 82 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
The 6-foot-2 Congolese recruit delivered on offense including five in the fifth set to help the Lady Bulldogs stun last year’s runners-up Tigresses and spoil the UST reunion of sisters Eya and EJ Laure.
NU opened an 8-3 lead in the decider before hanging on in the closing stretch of the match with Ivy Lacsina hammering the finishing crosscourt hit to seal the win.
Mutshima finished with 23 points built on 20 kills and three aces for the Lady Bulldogs, who were lockdown at the net with 16 kill blocks.
Lacsina and returning Risa Sato, who skipped last year’s action because of academic issues, posted 19 and 17 markers, respectively, for NU. The duo had seven kill blocks each while Joni Chavez tallied 21 excellent sets for the Lady Bulldogs.
Audrey Paran added nine points while sophomore libero Jen Nierva had 20 digs and 20 excellent receptions for NU.
Lady Bulldogs head coach Norman Miguel admitted that his team started out flat and were jittery.
“Ang hirap e. Kasi sa tingin ko yung game yung mga players kanina medyo nangibabaw pa ‘yung nerbyos sa game,” said Miguel. “Medyo natagalan maka-recover that’s why naapektuhan ‘yung skills namin sa passing sa mga ball control.”
His squad needed some time to get a feel of the game before getting into their groove.
“At saka siguro late na rin talaga nag-connect kailangan pa umabot sa dulo. So fourth set na kami totally nag-connect with each other,” said Miguel. “Nakuha na namin yung rhythm after nung fourth set, then finally nung fifth set yun na talaga yung nilalaro nila. Actually nung first set hanggang third talagang wild hindi namin maintindihan bat ganun yung kinikilos talaga.”
Eya Laure had 20 points with all but one coming off attacks laced with 18 digs for UST, who gave away 33 free points to NU off their errors. EJ Laure, who made her return after a two-year hiatus due to a shoulder injury, listed 17 points, 20 digs and 12 excellent receptions while rookie Imee Hernandez and Caitlyn Viray got 18 and nine markers, respectively, for the Tigresses.
