National men’s volleyball team captain John Vic De Guzman wears a different hat, this time as one of the new analysts for the UAAP Season 82 volleyball tournament.
The former NCAA champion and Most Valuable Player sat at the panel together with anchor Synjin Reyes on Wednesday, calling the game between University of the Philippines and Ateneo de Manila University in the men’s division.
De Guzman, the longest tenured PHI team member and part of the 30th Southeast Asian Games silver medal-winning squad, is no stranger in volleyball game broadcast. De Guzman worked as a courtside reporter and an analyst for a commercial league before.
But De Guzman admits that he is still trying to familiarize with the names, skills and background of players from each teams in the country's premier college league.
“Unang-una kinakapa ko pa ‘yung mga sasabihin ko. Most of the players are rookies, so kailangan kilalanin ko isa-isa and kung anong position nila,” said De Guzman, who is one of the Virtual Playground talents along with Mela Tunay tapped by ABS-CBN S+A as analysts this season.
“Siguro ang kaba ko doon sa part na hindi ko pa kabisado ang mga games nila, ‘di ko pa alam ‘yung mga background nila,” he added. “Pero once na may sumalang diyan na kakilala ko mas madali na for me makapagbigay ng feedback.”
The College of St. Benilde product was just happy that his UAAP debut was a memorable one especially with the young Fighting Maroons scoring an amazing straight-set upset over the Blue Eagles in a very competitive and entertaining duel.
“Dito sa first time ko masaya naman kasi maganda naman ‘yung nangyari sa game,” said De Guzman, who is also an actor and a commercial model. “Makikita mo ‘yung competitiveness sa teams talagang tumataas na yung level sa men’s volleyball.”
De Guzman gave himself a modest rating in his first run as a UAAP analyst.
“Feeling ko kung ire-rate ko [ang sarili ko] ng 1-10, parang five pa lang,” he said.
“Hindi, as in, for me kailangan mas mag-improve pa when it comes sa pagbibigay ng comments sa mga players and sa mga situations during games,” De Guzman added. “Hopefully, ma-overcome ko ‘yung kaba ko kasi ganoon naman talaga kapag first-timer kakabahan ka talaga. Sana mawala ang kaba sa mga susunod na games.”
