Season 82 finalists De La Salle University scored off a penalty kick late in the second half to hold Far Eastern University to a 1-1 draw in the opening day of the UAAP Season 82 Men's Football Tournament, Thursday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Last season's runners-up found themselves playing catch-up for majority of the match, thanks to a 13th-minute conversion from Tamaraws striker Martini Rey.
While DLSU had managed to control possession for most of the match, it was FEU who was able to make good on theirs early.
The Green Archers continued to push the action in the second half, but it was a foul inside the box in inside the 80-minute mark that gave the Taft-based side a chance to pull even.
DLSU skipper Jed Diamante calmly hit the penalty kick to even things up at 1-1 in the 87th minute.
With six minutes of injury time added, both sides tried to mount some offense and break the deadlock, but neither side could score before the final whistle went off.
"We still have quite a young team, but I'm satisfied with the 1 point," said DLSU coach Hans-Peter Smit. "1 point is still better than 0 points, considering that most of the game, 80-percent of the game, we were catching up."
FEU head coach Bo Bae Park on the other hand felt that his team did not play to their full strength even if they had led through most of the match.
"Actually, I think our players showed 50-percent only. I think next gameday, they'll play better, better than today's game."
