Nazareth School of National University took Far Eastern University-Diliman's best shot - and still won by 18 points.
Down 3-17 early in Game 1 of the UAAP 82 Boys Basketball Finals, the Bullpups just turned it on behind Terrence Fortea and Gerry Abadiano and scored a convincing 79-61 victory.
The defending champions hit the game's first basket as well as a bonus, but then saw the Baby Tamaraws fire 17 unanswered points.
In that timeframe when nothing was going right, National U never doubted. "Lagi kong iniisip sa sarili ko at lagi kong sinasabi sa teammates ko na malamangan man kami, kailangan lang naming patunayan yung laging sinasabi ni Coach Gold [Monteverde] na resilience," team captain Abadiano said.
He then continued, "Malamangan man kami or matambakan, babangon kami, ba-bounce back kami, babawi kami. Tuloy-tuloy kami hanggang tumunog yung final buzzer."
The Bullpups did that, and more, dominating their opponents, 64-31, from the five-minute mark of the first quarter to the end of the third period. "As a leader, nakaka-proud yung ganun kasi nakikita ko sa teammates ko yung sinasabi ko sa kanilang 'di tayo titigil," their skipper said.
Now, the blue and gold is one win away from a perfect season - something that has only been seen once in the high school ranks back in 2013.
At the same time, though, Abadiano is reminding his teammates not to look too far ahead. "Parang dati pa rin, maglalaro lang kami tapos bonus na lang kung na-sweep yung season. Kung anuman yung outcome, basta binigay namin yung best namin, tatanggapin namin," he shared.
He then continued, "Sinwerte lang na yun nga, puro panalo, pero 'di pa naman tapos kasi may Game 2 pa. Stay in the present pa rin kami."
