Lloyd Josafat played an inspired game as he showed his scoring prowess in University of the East’s 25-11, 23-25, 25-20, 28-26, win over University of the Philippines to enter the win column on Saturday in the UAAP Season 82 men’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena.

The sophomore exploded for 32 points including the game-clinching kill block that tied the Red Warriors with their victims at 1-1 win-loss record. Josafat hammered 29 kills, landed an ace and a kill block for UE, which ended an eight-game losing streak including a winless second round effort in the previous season.

"This game nakaka-proud sila kasi 'yung trinaining namin, lumalabas na. Tsaka tingin ko naman talagang gutom na gutom sila sa panalo eh," said UE coach Jerome Guhit.  "Tsaka, 'yun nga, sabi ko mga bata sila so nandiyan sila para i-prove 'yung sarili nila kaya maganda 'yung ginalaw nila."

Andy Andaya scored all of his 15 points off attacks while Kenneth Culabat finished with 14 markers, 16 digs and 20 excellent receptions for UE, who got 31 free points off the Fighting Maroons errors.

The Red Warriors got into trouble late in the fourth frame after consecutive miscues that gave the Fighting Maroons a 23-20 lead. Josafat sparked UE’s 3-0 counterattack to tie the set before UP moved at set point.

UE saved two set points but John Lomibao sent his attack long in the next play as the Red Warriors moved at match point.

Culabat overcooked his serve for another deuce, 26-26, but Andaya scored off a quick attack that put UE back at match point followed by Josafat’s game-winner.

The Diliman-based squad failed to sustain the momentum of its opening day sweep over Ateneo de Manila University last Wednesday.

Lomibao posted 18 points with 15 coming off attacks while John Millete and Louis Gamban had 12 and 11 markers, respectively, for the Fighting Maroons. Gamban added 10 digs and 14 excellent receptions.
