Ateneo de Manila University survived debuting De La Salle University’s desperate late game push to bounce back mightily from an opening day setback with a 25-20, 25-19, 27-25, win Saturday in the UAAP Season 82 men’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena.
Chu Njigha powered the Blue Eagles to their first win following a debut loss at the hands of University of the Philippines to tie their tormentors and University of the East at the standings.
The third year middle fired 18 kills and had two kill blocks for 20 points while Kurt Aguilar and Ron Medalla had 13 and 12 markers, respectively, for the Katipunan-based squad. Lawrence Magadia tallied 20 excellent sets to help Ateneo setup 50 attack points.
“I’m just happy that everyone performed well today,” said Ateneo coach Timmy Sto. Tomas. “So coming from a tough loss against UP I was very happy that my players stood up to the call na kailangan makabawi this game.”
Ateneo cruised in the first two sets before facing tough resistance from the Green Spikers in the third.
DLSU didn’t give up without a fight as the Green Spikers came back from 20-22 down to tie the third set at 23. Njigha answered with a hit to halt DLSU’s run to move at match point.
Egie Magadia gave the Green Spikers a chance to recover after sending his service short. DLSU got the set point advantage, 25-24, on a Vince Maglinao kill block.
The Green Spikers were called for an error in the next play before Aguilar scored off an off speed that set up the game-winning kill block of Medalla.
John Mark Ronquillo was the lone DLSU player in double figures with 11 points while Vince Maglinao added nine.
