Ateneo de Manila University's offense was running on all cylinders, as the defending champions cruised to a 6-1 victory over University of Santo Tomas to record their first win in the UAAP Season 82 Men's Football Tournament, Sunday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Team captain Nino Herrera was in the forefront of the Blue Eagles' offensive attack, as he was able to draw first blood just ten minutes in, firing from outside the box off a Luka Alleje assist.
In the 27th minute, Mark Nacional was the reciepient of a well-placed cross as he was charging into the box, leading to an easy tip-in past UST keeper Ralph Logronio.
At the 40-minute mark, Nacional again made his presence felt on the offensive end, this time being the playmaker as he found Alleje for Ateneo's third goal. Two minutes later, Herrera's risky pass inside the box found its way to the back of the net, courtesy of a Sam Lim header, making it a 4-0 drubbing at the midway point.
The scoring spree spilled over into the second half for Ateneo, as Herrera made good on a penalty kick in the 53rd minute following a UST foul inside the box to make it a comfortable 5-0 cushion. It was Herrera's third goal of the young UAAP season.
The Growling Tigers managed to pull one back in the 69th minute, courtesy of rookie Stephen Marasigan, who recorded his second goal of the year.
Jabez Setters put the finishing touches in the 75-minute mark, as he easily scores on a header off a keeper miscue.
"Yung target talaga namin for this game was to get the three points," said Ateneo head coach Jaypee Merida. "Yun din, to improve palagi, so na-improve namin yung movement namin from the UP game. Yung movement ng UP, talagang unpredictable, di mo ma-control kung saan nang-gagaling, so yung nangyari siguro against UST dito is talagang nag-improve yung movement and yung hunger to score talaga.
With the win, Ateneo snags their first win of the tournament, bouncing back from their opening day draw to University of the Philippines. The defending champions now have 4 points in the tournament.
UST meanwhile absorbs their first loss of the season after taking their opening matchup against National University. The Growling Tigers sit at 3 points.
