Season 81 finalists De La Salle University came back from one goal down to defeat Adamson University, 2-1 in UAAP Season 82 Men's Football action, Sunday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Coming off an opening day loss to University of the East, Adamson looked to bounce back at the expense of last season's first runners-up, and early on, it appeared to be headed in that direction, as Bryce Rabino put the Soaring Falcons on the board in the 31st minute with a tough shot from inside the box for his second goal of the season.
The Green Archers rallied in the second half, beginning with Franck Anoh hitting the equalizer in the 52nd minute.
12 minutes later, sophomore Mikio Umilin surged inside the box and beat his defenders before firing off what would be the go-ahead goal.
Adamson pressed to find an equalizer of their own, while DLSU tried to widen the gap, but after 90 minutes of action and a four-minute extension, the 2-1 scoreline stood in favor of the Taft-based side, who held on for their first win of the season.
"We had to make the adjustments, it's two same first halves, it doesn't work, so we have to change the system of play," said DLSU head coach Hans-Peter Smit, referring to their second straight game of being down 0-1 after the first half. "Find out, put people in that you think can be a game-changer."
"All we had to do is just finish it. 2-1 doesn't even make a difference, the score. Of course, everyone would want a better goal margin, but a win is a win. 3 points is 3 points, that's the most important," Smit added.
Smit also touched on the importance of getting a 3-point result, even early in the season.
"It's very important. Like I always say, the UAAP is cutthroat. One mistake, one slip, and you can lose a chance, regardless of how early it is in the season. Every game counts, every win counts, every goal counts."
With the win, DLSU improves to 1 win and 1 draw for 4 points. Adamson drops to 2 losses in as many matches for 0 points.
