UAAP Season 82: Tams take share of lead

Jude Garcia went on a tear and took over in the fifth frame to power Far Eastern University to its second straight win with a 25-21, 24-26, 20-25, 25-22, 15-12 escape over University of Sto. Tomas in the UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena on Sunday.
The Tamaraws recovered from a 1-2 match deficit and leaned on Garcia’s heroics as the last year’s runner-up joined two-time defending champion National University on top of the standing.
Garcia fired 27 points built on 21 attacks including the game-winning kill, three aces and three kill blocks for the Morayta-based squad.
The graduating hitter anchored FEU's hot start in the deciding set as the Tams raced to a 5-0 advantage. UST fought back to move withing two, 9-7, only to see FEU pull away once more with Garcia pounding down an attack for a 13-9 advantage.
Peter Quiel put the Tams at match point on a quick attack. Jau Umandal and Vyxen Valenzuela saved two match points before Garcia's finisher.
“Galing ng UST eh. Ang maganda s’yempre na test yung kakayahan natin saka binigyan tayo ng magandang blessing nakuha natin ang panalo,” said FEU coach Rei Diaz.
JP Bugaoan and JJ Javelona added 13 markers each while Mark Calado dropped 12 points for the Tams, who pulled through despite throwing away 43 points off errors. FEU had nine more attack points than UST with 60 and plucked 12 markers on kill blocks. .
The Golden Spikers suffered their second defeat in as many games.
Umandal again waxed-hot on offense with 21 points anchored on 18 attacks in another losing effort for UST while Jhun Senoron and Wewe Medina posted 17 and 10 points, respectively.
