The UAAP released a statement on Saturday terminating the remainder of all high school events whether pending or yet to commence for Season 82 while alternative formats are being discussed for college sporting events amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
According to the memo, all high school events are cancelled and that University of Sto. Tomas and Adamson are declared co-champions in girls’ basketball. Both teams had a win in their best-of-three Finals series.
Further, the regular formats for different sporting events in the college division are likewise cancelled and that the UAAP will work towards alternative formats for competition to begin no earlier than May 1.
The UAAP Board last Tuesday unanimously decided to extend the suspension of all UAAP events until March 17, 2020. This announcement came hours after initially declaring a halt on all events until March 14.
On Thursday, President Rodrigo Duterter put the National Capital Region under community quarantine beginning Sunday until April 14 as part of the measures to curb the spread of the virus.
Last month, the UAAP suspended all second semester events before resuming March 3.
The last time UAAP halted its season was back in 1941 during the outbreak of World War 2. No competition was held during the Japanese occupation.
The UAAP resumed competition in 1947 hosted by University of Sto. Tomas.
