Even with the whole of Luzon under an enhanced community quarantine because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic, players of the University of Sto. Tomas men’s volleyball team found ways to keep themselves in tip-top shape.

Some of the Golden Spikers posted on their social media accounts videos of them taking on the home workout challenge and how they protect themselves from the dreaded virus.

Back in his hometown in Orani, Bataan, Wewe Medina follows a daily workout routine while waiting for the community quarantine to be lifted.    

“Everyday po talaga ako nag-workout. Ang hirap po kasi mapahinga and tumaba and bawas po talaga sa food,” he said.

Medina also sees the lockdown as a chance to bond with his family. And what better way to spend time with them than working out together.      

“Lockdown po dito sa province namin so lagi lang po kami nasa house and ayun lagi lang pong bonding with them,” said Medina.

  

JAU UMANDAL

The national team member gets a little creative with his workout.

In his video, Umandal plays with his cute little cousin while doing lunges.

“Pinapangalagaan ko ang sarili ko sa panahon ng COVID-19 through workout. Siyempre pampalakas ng katawan,” said UST’s leading scorer. “Nagti-take rin ng vitamins and kumain ng mga healthy food.”  

“Saka palagi kami nag lilinis ng bahay at palagi kami gumagamit ng alcohol para sa safety din naming,” added Umandal.

Umandal works out twice a day while binge-watching series on Netflix.  

“Ang mga activities na ginagawa ko habang naka community quarantine kami is watching series in Netflix and work out every morning and evening para ma-maintain yung body fat,” he said. “Kasi ‘di naman sure if cancelled ba talaga ang UAAP mas okay na naghahanda ka pa ren kaysa sumabak ulit ng walang kondisyon ang katawan.”

This rookie follows a strict schedule when it comes to his home workout and activities.

“What I usually do ngayon nag-stay lang sa bahay. Every morning, 7:00 a.m. workout and pahinga. Have some chill, time watch movies and then at 5:00 p.m. back to workout pa din,” said the very disciplined freshman.

“Kasi kahit suspended pa ang UAAP I need to keep myself na kondisyon pa din,” added Señoron. “Para if ever na bumalik na sa training hindi mabibigla ulit at ready pa din sa upcoming games.”

To keep safe in these trying times, Señoron follows the government’s directive to stay at home and keeps himself healthy.       

“Stay lang palagi sa house para makaiwas sa lugar na maraming tao and proper hygiene, and gamit palagi ng alcohol para ma-sanitize,” said Senoron. “Water lang palagi kong iniinom and of course ‘di pwedeng mawala kumakain pa din ng tama.”

 

GENESIS REDIDO

UST coaches gave their players a home workout program to follow during the long break.

Redido makes sure to follow the workout routine to a tee as well to keep a healthy diet while at home.   

“First of all siyempre stay at home. Eat healthy foods. Mag-home workout pa rin kasi may ibinigay naman na program ang coaches,” he said. “Siyempre, bawal pa rin sa matatamis. Kumain lang ng tama.”

In between his workouts, Redido spends his time on movie binge-watching or helping out on household chores.

The Luzon lockdown as well as the suspension of the UAAP Season 82 is not an excuse to slack around.

Magpayo makes sure that no time will be wasted while he’s stuck at home in Orani, Bataan.         

“Hindi ako makakalabas papunta sa gym kase sarado lahat ng mga barangay so the first thing i do is home workout syempre,” he said.

And his weapon of choice: kettlebell

When done with his workout, Magpayo is busy with other activities.

“Ako ang nagluluto sa amin and inaalagaan ang pamangkin ko,” he said. “Sometimes kapag bored ako nagagawa kong mag-Tiktok and manood ng Netflix, haha!”
