Ateneo de Manila University's point guard position is secure from the present to the foreseeable future.
In SJ Belangel, the Blue Eagles have hands as steady as Matt Nieto to steer them to yet another title defense.
In a parallel universe, though, Belangel would not be wearing blue and white.
Rather, he would be clad in the rival green and white.
Yes, the 6-foot primetime playmaker once repped University of St. La Salle in his hometown of Bacolod.
Belangel saw action for the Stingers from 2009 to 2011.
And according to him, it was USLS which first took a chance on him when he was just a Grade 4 student-athlete. "That was the first school that saw my potential in basketball. They recruited me to play for them since my dad is an alumnus," he shared.
Sammy, SJ's father, once studied in USLS and saw action for the Stingers himself.
The younger Belangel wouldn't stay long in green and white, however, as right before Grade 9, he transferred to Ateneo.
And just two years later, he would lead the Blue Eaglets to a championship. "It was truly my dream since I was a kid to play for Ateneo," he said.
The 20-year-old is doing just that now as he and Tyler Tio are out to make sure Ateneo's Srs. squad does not skip a beat even after the graduation of "Matty Ice."
Asked if he ever thinks what if he remained in green and white, he answered, "Honestly, it crosses my mind, pero I never really delve into it."
With that, Belangel said he just could not wait for the next rivalry game. As he put it, "There is really no doubt that I feel a different rush and drive going into an Ateneo-La Salle."
