A year ago, the Sisi Rondina-bannered University of Sto. Tomas pulled off a shocker when the Tigresses demolished the seasoned Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles in straight sets in the series opener of the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball Finals.
In front of a roaring 17,682-strong crowd, UST bared its teeth to start the best-of-three series as it ripped Ateneo apart, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20, in the two proud schools historic first meeting for the title.
Rondina, who eventually won the season’s Most Valuable Player award, poured in a game-high 23 points in what would be the first of her last three outings as a Tigress.
The Cebu pride was a statistics monster that game, filling the stats sheet both on offense and defense. Rondina had 20 attack points off 50 attempts, two kill blocks and added an ace.
She was also active on defense as she put up 12 digs and five receptions in the Tigresses' first championship appearance since a runner-up finish in Season 73.
Rookie Eya Laure added 11 points while Caitlin Viray, Ysa Jimenez and setter Alina Bicar combined for 19 markers for the Tigresses, who ended a 15-game head-to-head losing streak to Ateneo.
Kat Tolentino was the only Lady Eagle in double figures with 12 points while Maddie Madayag and Bea De Leon combined for only 10 markers for Ateneo, which only had 24 attack points compared to UST’s 46.
