From training facility to isolation facility - that is the transformation the University of the Philippines’ College of Human Kinetics Annex Gym has undergone.
The CHK Annex, venue of practices for the school’s Pep Squad and Women’s Basketball Team, is now housing recovering patients from COVID-19 as well as persons awaiting their test results.
“Siyempre, nakita namin yung significance of serving the UP community,” CHK dean and UAAP Board of Managing Directors member Francis Diaz said. “Wala pa namang face-to-face classes so we saw fit na gawin ito.”
Normally a basketball court with a wooden floor, the new isolation facility, converted with the help of Maynilad and Rep. Mike Defensor’s UP ACTasONE, has been fitted with tents with mattresses and beddings as well as showers and toilets.
Before the building of the brand new Epsilon Chi Center, State U’s Men’s Basketball Team also trained in the CHK Annex.
Former Fighting Maroons Gelo Vito and Diego Dario shared fond memories of their time there, but also expressed happiness that it was now turned into a place to help out in the continuing COVID-19 crisis.

Even better, their concern was already taken care of even before they voiced it out.
The heat is unbearable which is why we are installing 4 exhaust fans and misting lines. So sorry we couldn’t have done this while you were still training in the Annex Gym. Abangan!— Atty. Mars (@mars_arias) May 15, 2020
