Aiza Maizo-Pontillas is one of best players to ever wear the University of Sto. Tomas jersey.
She helped the Tigresses win two UAAP women’s volleyball titles during her stay with the black and gold, including UST’s last championship a decade ago in Season 72.
While Maizo-Ponatillas consistently delivered the goods for the Tigresses during her stay with the Espana-based squad, one stood out.
It was on Nov. 27, 2010 when Maizo-Pontillas recorded her personal UAAP-best scoring performance.
Coming off a successful title run eight months prior, Maizo-Pontillas came off firing on all cylinders in her first game as a senior in Season 73.
UST faced an early challenge when it took on Ateneo de Manila University at The Arena in San Juan.
In front of a then decent 1,764-strong crowd, the lefty opposite unleashed 32 points for the Tigresses’ five-set escape over the gritty Lady Eagles, 25-13, 18-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-13.
Maizo-Pontillas fired 29 off 83 attacks. She also had three kill blocks in the match that lasted for two hours and 20 minutes, where she played as a starter in all frames.
Aside from her scoring, Maizo-Pontilas also anchored UST’s floor defense with 11 digs and seven excellent receptions for an all-around game.
Her 32-point explosion came two years after registering 30 points in a four-set loss to Adamson University in Season 71.
Maizo-Pontillas’ output would stand for nine years as the team’s best single-game production.
On March 20, 2019, Sisi Rondina dropped 35 points in a sorry five-set defeat at the hands of Ateneo in Season 81.
The former UST open hitter also tied the league’s best scoring output in the Final Four era after Alyssa Valdez posted the same markers in 2013.
