If it had its way, the UAAP would have a full calendar of events for Season 83.

“We are planning to have a full calendar, but that’s dependent on the government and the schools themselves,” outgoing league president Em Fernandez of Ateneo de Manila University said in the Philippine Sportswriters Association online forum on Tuesday. “These are students. Normalcy in schools will take precedent.”

That means that, ideally, all eight member-schools would be competing in all sports come, ideally, early next year. “Based on what the government stated that no tournaments until December 2020, we’re looking at first quarter of 2021,” Fernandez said.

However, nothing is set in stone as competitions and their competitors depend on how each and every university has been coping up with the continuing COVID-19 crisis.

As of the moment, Ateneo is the first to guarantee it would be seeing the full calendar through - and not just mandatory sports such as basketball and volleyball.

“For us, we’re preparing for all sports,” Fernandez, the school’s representative to the Board of Managing Directors, said.

At the same time, the full calendar is far from a sure thing as the UAAP remains in wait for the government’s next steps. “We have all these plans na full calendar, pero yung assurance yung mahirap eh. Even though it would be allowed, it doesn’t necessarily mean that we should hold it,” league executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag said.

One of the options being considered by the league is simultaneously holding majority of its events. “We’re thinking of doing parang SEA Games. What’s stopping UAAP from doing the same thing?” Fernandez said.

He then continued, “What’s stopping the UAAP from running basketball side-by-side with volleyball? The idea is to have the full calendar, pero para lang nag-start ang all sports ng second sem.”

The 2019 Southeast Asian Games was held from November 30 to December 11 and counted 56 sports and over 500 events.

For the UAAP, the same sort of length is very much possible for Season 83.
