Former University of Sto. Tomas standout Sisi Rondina has long accepted the fact that Ateneo de Manila University was the better team during their UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball Finals series last year.
The Lady Eagles had the advantage in experience, height, firepower and depth that proved too much for the Tigresses, who were just on their first championship appearance in eight years.
But the Season 81 Most Valuable Player mentioned one particular Lady Eagle who broke the backs of the Tigresses during that best-of-three series-clinching match.
“Si Dani (Ravena) nagdala noon eh,” said Rondina of the then sophomore Ateneo libero during her appearance in The Prospects Pod. “Masasabi ko na si Dani kasi lahat ng palo ko nakukuha niya kahit abang na abang na talaga.”
Known for her powerful kills and high-leaping ability, Rondina was a handful in the series opener when UST shocked the Lady Eagles in straight sets in the first-ever Finals meeting of the two proud schools.
Ateneo equalized in Game 2 to set up a thrilling decider.
The winner-take-all match turned out to be a one-sided affair brought mainly by the Lady Eagles’ choking defense at the net anchored by middles Maddie Madayag and Bea De Leon and the superb floor defense of Ravena, who was quiet during the elimination round before unveiling her true form in the Finals.
Ravena played her role well in three games of the championship series averaging 14.3 digs and almost eight excellent receptions per match. In Game 3, Ravena tallied 13 digs and seven excellent receptions.
Looking back, Rondina thought that the Season 81 championship wasn’t really theirs to take.
Even if others would like to believe that UST could’ve had a better chance of winning it all if only Eya Laure didn’t accidentally land on Kat Tolentino’s foot in that fateful set in Game 2 and was 100% healthy all the way.
“May beliefs po kasi akong kung anong binigay, ‘yun lang, ganon,” said the Cebuana. “So kung 100 percent si Eya, hindi naman ibibigay ng Ateneo ‘yun eh. So kumbaga, hindi namin ibibigay ‘to sa Ateneo, ganon din sila. Kasi makikita’t makikita mo pa rin kung gaano sila kabuo maglaro, kung gaano sila the way sila maglaro lalong lalo na si Dani.”
