VIDEO: Before MMA, there were the Gracie challenge matches
A vintage edition of mixed martial arts, portayed through the lens of an old school, grainy video camera.

Mixed martial arts as we know it today, is basically an entirely modern brand of fighting that was introduced to America in the early 90’s.

But before the boom of MMA and cagefighting, there were the Gracie Challenge matches. In a nutshell, these no holds barred in-house fights were held at the Gracie Academy in California, mainly to prove which discipline would be most effective in a real fight setting.

For the Gracies, of course, its purpose was to prove that Jiu-Jitsu trumps all, whether they are up against a champion boxer or a decorated college wrestler.

At first, members of the Gracie family were the ones who would usually partake in these said matches, but as the awareness about Jiu Jitsu grew, their students became involved, as well.

In this 20-minute clip, one can clearly see how the famed grappling art was indeed able to dominate every adversary. While today’s mixed martial arts scene has evidently evolved by leaps and bounds, this video offers a refreshing throwback to the time that was.
