Petron sweeps, captures PSL All-Filipino title
The Big Three of Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Abigail Marano and Conference Most Valuable Player Rachel Anne Daquis powered Petron to a season sweep.
Celebration erupted inside the court as Dindin Santiago-Manabat smashed the championship point from the left corner as the Petron Blaze Spikers completed the best-of-three series sweep against the Shopinas.com Lady Clickers, 25-17, 22-25, 30-28, 25-17, Thursday to hoist the 2015 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference trophy at the Cuneta Astrodome.
The Big Three of Petron delivered the goods as Santiago-Manabat and Abigail Marano scored 18 points each, including a combined 29 out of the 55 kills nailed by the Blaze Spikers, while Conference Most Valuable Player Rachel Anne Daquis scattered 16 before calling it a day late in the fourth set due to cramps on her left leg.
Frances Molina also played a big role in providing 10 points for the undefeated Blaze Spikers, who wrote history buy sweeping all their 13 matches in the conference to pocket the club’s second straight title since winning the Grand Prix last season.
The third set proved to be the most decisive moment for the Blaze Spikers, outlasting the Lady Clickers in a tight contest after splitting the first two frames.
Petron saved five set points, rallying from a 22-23 deficit and tying the frame at 28 on a Marano running cross.
Cha Cruz committed a fatal attack miscue in an awkward set play before Morada silenced Shopinas with a sharp service ace.
The Blaze Spikers raced to a 12-6 lead in the fourth set before the Lady Clickers played catch up to breathe down Petron’s neck, 16-17, on a Rizza Mandapat off the block point.
From here Marano took charge in scoring three straight points in Petron’s 5-1 counter for a 22-17 lead. Santiago-Manabat scored on a drop followed by Shopinas’ error to put Petron at championship point.
Finally, Santiago-Manabat got a superb setup to pound the last nail of the Lady Clickers’ coffin.
Cruz finished with 13 points, Mandapat had 12 while Stephanie Mercado got 11 for Shopinas, bridesmaids yet again in three consecutive tries.
Petron was relentless in the series opener last Monday when it turned an expected tight game into a rout 25-18, 25-14, 25-19, witnessed by a jam-packed crown inside the Imus Sports Complex in Cavite.
Meanwhile, Cruz won the 1st Best Outside Spiker award while Patty Orendain of Foton bagged the 2nd Best Outside Spiker plum.
Other winners are Santiago-Manabat (1st Best Middle Blocker), Marano (2nd Best Middle Blocker), Michelle Gumabao (Best Opposite Spiker) and Filipino-American Iris Tolenada (Best Setter) of Philips Gold while Jen Reyes of Petron took home the Best Libero award.
