PLDT snatches V-League Reinforced Conference title
The PLDT Home Ultera Ultra Fast Lady Hitters are once again queens of the Shakey's V-League.
PLDT Home Ultera once again stomped its mastery over Philippine Army.
Power-hitting Alyssa Valdez sizzled with 22 points to lead the Ultra Fast Lady Hitters to a 25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21 Game 2 victory Sunday to complete a clean sweep of the best-of-three Shakey’s V-League 12 Reinforced Conference championship series at The Arena in San Juan.
The Finals Most Valuable Player displayed her scoring repertoire as Valdez slammed 17 kills with four service aces and a block kill to devastate the defense of the Lady Troopers, who for the second straight time in the league’s 12th season finished as a runnerups for PLDT after a bitter Open Conference finals loss last summer.
American guest player Sareea Freeman added 17 points while veteran Suzanne Roces and Grethcel Solotones, Valdez’s teammate in the national team that played in the Asian U-23 and Singapore Southeast Asian Games, scored 10 markers each for the Ultra Fast Hitters.
PLDT took the series opener last week, 16-25, 20-25, 26-24, 29-27, 18-16.
Abigail Marano played her heart out for Army with 14 points built on 12 spikes but even her great effort didn’t save her from absorbing another championship defeat less than 24 hours after the former De La Salle stalwart suffered a straight set loss with Petron against Foton in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix Finals Game 3.
Jovelyn Gonzaga added 13 markers while Joanne Bunag had nine for the Lady Troopers, who had a great run in the eliminations and were the favorites to win it all until PLDT fielded two American imports in Freeman and Victoria Hurtt starting in the semifinals and with the return of Valdez.
Meanwhile, University of the Philippines gave a glimpse of what's to come in their campaign in the UAAP.
Five Lady Maroons registered double-digit scoring to power UP to a 25-20, 24-26, 25-23, 25-15 victory over the Philippine Navy to complete a clean sweep of the battle for third.
Senior player Kathy Bersola and freshman Justine Dorog scored 17 points each while Ma. Lina Molde had 16 markers. Nicole Tiamzon finished with 13 while Marian Buitre got 12 for UP.
