The Philippine Superliga formally announced Tuesday night at the Far Eastern University gym in Manila the official 14-woman lineup of the squad that will see action in the Thai-Denmark Super League slated on March 23 to 28.
Former De La Salle stars Abigail Marano, Stephanie Mercado and Cha Cruz of F2 Logistics and Philips Gold duo of Michelle Gumabao and libero Melissa Gohing lead the all-star cast that will banner the country’s club league in the 8-team tournament composed of six squads from the Thailand League Championship and a team from Hong Kong.
Games will be played at MCC Hall, The Mall Bangkapi in Bangkok. The eight teams will be divided into two groups playing in a round robin stage where the top two squads will meet the other top two teams from the other bracket in a crossover knockout semifinals. The championship is also a winner-take-all affair.
The PSL team will also serve as a mini reunion of former University of Sto. Tomas stars that led the Tigresses to its last UAAP championship back in 2010 with lefty opposite hitter Aiza Maizo-Pontillas of Petron sharing the court once again with Rhea Dimaculangan and Maika Ortiz of Foton.
Also making the cut are Cignal players April Ross Hingpit and Jeannette Panaga; Jen Reyes, Mina Aganon and Ces Molina; and RC Cola-Army’s Rachel Anne Daquis.
Two-time PSL champion coach George Pascua of Petron will handle the team with Macky Carino, who steered the College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers to its breakthrough NCAA crown a month ago, serving as his lieutenant.
The team will fly to Thailand on March 21 and will return to Manila on the 29th.
