GROUNDED: The reunion of former and current Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles won't happen as the Katipunan-based school's management declined to field a team in the V-League.
Ateneo de Manila University won’t field a team for the Open Conference of the 13th V-League slated to begin on May 22 leaving three-time UAAP Most Valuable Player Alyssa Valdez open to join any squad.
The school’s athletic director Em Fernandez confirmed that the school management declined to commit the former back-to-back UAAP champions to play in the amateur volleyball league.
“No plans of joining the V-League this coming conference,” said Fenandez Monday.
In an earlier report, V-League Commissioner Tony Boy Liao, also the Lady Eagles’ team manager, said that he’s planning to form a team of former and current Ateneo players to participate in the eight-team field. The team was supposed to get the services of ex-Lady Charo Soriano and Denden Lazaro to join Valdez and the rest of the Ateneo crew that finished second to archrival De La Salle University in the 78th UAAP tournament.
Fernandez, however, said that the squad will join the SVL Collegiate Conference aside from representing the country in the ASEAN University Games in July.
“No other plans for this summer. (But) the second conference of the V-League is the other tournament we are planning to join,” he added.
Valdez, who is scheduled to fly to Doha, Qatar on May 19 before going to a European tour late this month, according to Fernandez is open to play on any team as she already completed her five-year tour of duty for the Katipunan-based squad.
“Alyssa can join any other team, she already finished her UAAP career with Ateneo,” said the school official.
