Alyssa Valdez reunites with Denden Lazaro, Gretchen Ho and Charo Soriano in a selection of Ateneo de Manila alumni.
The reunion of former Ateneo de Manila University players will push through after all.
Despite the Katipunan-based school’s management’s decision to field its current team that placed second in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament, fans of the blue and white are in for a treat as popular volleyball idol Alyssa Valdez banners a selection of former Ateneo players.
The three-time UAAP Most Valuable Player Valdez said after the collegiate season that she’s committed to play in the 13th V-League Open Conference that will hold a no-game opening ceremony on May 22 at The Arena in San Juan.
Action starts on May 28.
She was supposed to play with the current Ateneo crew but the school decided to skip the tournament and will instead participate in the Collegiate Conference that usually starts August.
But the Queen Eagle this time will have her ex-teammate libero Denden Lazaro, who helped her during the Lady Eagles’ reign in Seasons 76 and 77 titles, by her side, with Charo Soriano acting as playing-coach, and Dzi Gervacio.
NCAA back-to-back MVP Grethcel Soltones and Alyssa Eroa of San Sebastian and former San Beda player Janine Marciano are also part of the squad.
Former playmaker Jem Ferrer and Ella De Jesus begged off because of conflict with their work schedule while Fille Cainglet-Cayetano won't be able to play because of her pregnancy.
The team’s name is yet to be decided with talks with a sponsor still in the works. Other members of the squad is also yet to be composed.
This will be Lazaro’s first competitive tournament after playing in the 2015 Open Conference a year ago with PLDT to concentrate on medical school.
Valdez will join the team after her Middle Eastern and European tour late this month.
A total of eight teams will vie for the crown including National University, University of the Philippines, KIA, Pocari Sweat, Baguio, Air Force and Iriga City.
