Nakaka-overwhelm na of all the people na nagpa-draft ako yung no. 1 -- Ara Galang
In a surprising twist, RC Cola-Army passed on its draw for the top overall pick and F2 Logistics got a golden opportunity to tap a dangerous spiker in former De La Salle Lady Spiker Ara Galang Friday in the 2016 Philippine Superliga Rookie Draft held at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall on Pasay City.
Galang, who helped DLSU regain the UAAP crown last month against archrival Ateneo de Manila, joined her Lady Spikers teammates and direct hires Mika Reyes, Kim Fajardo, Cyd Demecillo, Kim Dy and most of the Taft-based squad’s championship crew except for Mika Esperanza together with former DLSU veterans Aby Marano, Paneng Mercado and Cha Cruz. DLSU mentor Ramil De Jesus is calling the shots for F2 Logistics.
“Nakaka-overwhelm na of all the people na nagpa-draft ako yung no. 1,” said the 22-year-old Angeles, Pampanga native who topped the 16-woman rookie hopefuls.
Four-time PSL champion RC Cola-Army coach Kungfu Reyes said that they decided to skip a pick because they already have a full arsenal.
“Kumpleto na kami kaya nag-pass na kami so napunta na sa F2 Logistics ‘yung top pick,” said Reyes, whose team moved back to select the eight overall pick but passed on their selection as well as in their turn in second round.
Petron picked middle blocker Christine Joy Rosario, who played for the Tri-Activ Spikers in the Invitational tournament, of Arellano University as second overall pick.
“’Di ako nakatulog pinagpi-pray ko talaga ‘yun kagabi na mag-stay ako sa Peton kasi mahirap mag-adjust e,” said the 23-year-old Rosario, whose brother Troy Rosario coincidentally was a second overall pick in the 2015-16 PBA season for Talk ‘N Text.
University of Mindanao setter Renelyn Raterta was the third overall pick for Amy’s Kitchen-Perpetual. Six-foot-1 Far Eastern University standout Gen Casugod was picked no. 4 Generika, Cignal HD tapped Mary Grace Berte from Holy Cross of Davao College, Foton selected Dana Henson of Arellano U, Standard Insurance-Navy got an outside hitter in Jonah Sabete of Bulacan State U as seventh overall pick before Army skipped a selection to end the first round.
F2 Logistics, Petron and Amy’s Kitchen-Perpetual all passed in the first three picks in the second round before Generika took the stage to put their team jacket to setter Angelica Legacion of Arellano U. Cignal HD tapped Marlyn Llagoso of Southwestern University before Foton picked Shirley Salamagos of Arellano U. Standard Insurance-Navy and Army passed on their turn to select to end the Draft.
Lourdes Patillano of Adamson, Sarina Bulan of University of the East, Christine Suyao of Emilio Aguinaldo College and University of Negros Occidental’s Sheryll Laborte, sister of Cignal HD veteran MicMic Laborte, were unfortunately unpicked and are now free agents.
