Jessica Galanza of Laoag penetrates the defense of Shyrra Cabriana of Iriga.
Laoag marched into battle with only 11 players available but still managed to bounce back from its opening day loss at the expense of newcomer Iriga Lady Uragons in the night cap of the 13th V-League Open Conference Monday night at The Arena in San Juan.
The Power Smashers turned back the Lady Uragons, 25-10, 25-23, 20-25, 25-15, despite missing the services of Arellano Universty’s Jovielyn Prado and libero Eunice Galang.
Just like in their four-set loss to National University last Saturday, it was the Adamson duo of Jessica Galanza and Mylene Paat that shouldered the scoring load for the Nes Pamilar-mentored squad. Galanza finished with 16 points, 14 coming off kills, while Paat added 11 markers for the now 1-1 Power Smashers.
“Wala naman kaming masyadong adjustments. Ang sinabi ko lang sa kanila ay gawin nila ang ginagawa namin sa ensayo,” said Pamilar, who had to adjust his starting lineup with Galang and Prado playing for their school’s campaign in the Intercollegiate tournament in Baguio.
Katherine Villegas had nine points while former Far Eastern University star Wenneth Eulalio scored six for Laoag, which feasted on Iriga’s 43 errors.
Behind the efforts of Grazielle Bombita and Jose Rizal University’s Shola Alvarez, the Camarines, Sur-based squad prevented a shutout by stealing the third set.
But the Power Smashers regrouped in the fourth frame and extinguished the fight from Iriga early to barge in the win column.
Bombita finished with 16 points sending 11 bombs from powerful attacks while Alvarez had 13 for the Lady Uragons.
