Philippine Air Force outplayed an Alyssa Valdez-less Bali Pure side in four sets.
Philippine Air Force capitalized on the absence of Bali Pure’s pair of prized hitters to turn back the crowd-favorite Purest Water Defenders, 25-23, 14-25, 25-19, 25-16, Monday to start its campaign in the 13th V-League Open Conference on a high note at The Arena in San Juan.
Unheralded Dell Palomata provided the firepower for the Jet Spikers, banging away 10 kills in her 16-point output to make her presence felt.
“Nag-step up si Wendy Semana and buti nakakuha kami ng Dell Palomata,” said Air Force coach Jasper Jimenez.
The towering De La Salle-Bacolod product hit five of the eight service aces for Air Force, which took advantage of the Purest Water Defenders playing without three-time Most Valuable Player Alyssa Valdez and NCAA back-to-back MVP Grethcel Soltones. The duo are in Europe for an exhibition game. They are expected to play next week against National University.
Judy Ann Caballejo, the only remaining University of Sto. Tomas star in the team after the departure of setter Rhea Dimaculangan and Maika Ortiz, showed her vintage form with 13 markers including 10 attacks while Jocemer Tapic and May Ann Patino had 10 points each while Semana dished out 43 excellent sets for the Jet Spikers.
Bali Pure recovered in te second set after yielding the opening frame, leading by as much as 20-10 after an Ella De Jesus ace. The Air Force regrouped in the third set to gain back the momentum.
The Jet Spikers broke out of a 13-10 lead in the fourth frame, pouncing on the miscues of the Purest Water defenders to cruise to a 22-12 advantage.
Bali Pure tried to fight back but Palomata and Caballejo stave off the Water Defenders rally with timely attacks.
Amy Ahomiro led Bali Pure with 13 points while Dzi Gervacio and Ella De Jesus had 12 markers each. The Purest Water Defenders committed 29 errors including the match-ending service error by De Jesus.
