Title contender Philippine Air Force scored a walk in the park kill Wednesday to join the list of opening day winners in the 2nd Spikers Turf Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
Behind the dangerous troika of Reyson Fuentes, Fauzi Ismail and NCAA Most Valuable Player Howard Mojica, the Airmen demolished Sta. Elena Construction in straight sets, 25-21, 25-18, 25-21, to join Instituto Estetico Manila and Cignal HD on top of the standings.
Ismail of National University and Mojica pumped in 10 kills each of the 40 spikes unleashed by the Air Force. Fauzi and Fuentes scored 13 points each while Mojica had 10 markers for the Airmen.
“Mahigit isang buwan na rin kaming nagpa-practice kaya yung chemistry nand’yan na,” said Airmen coach Rhovyl Verayo, who added that he recruited Mojica and Ismail to fill in for RanRan Abdilla who suffered an right knee injury last season.
Jeffrey Malabanan and Rodolfo Labrador scored seven markers each for Air Force, which will take on Cignal on Saturday in an early clash of powerhouse teams.
No player in Sta. Elena scored in double figures with Arjay Onia scoring eight points while Peter Torres and skipper Rocky Honrade were silenced to six markers each.
